of birthdays and lost days
The morning of Dec 14th:
He wakes up with the sun on any given day, but today anticipation has him awake earlier than that. Today is a very special day, one of few anniversaries he keeps in mind but won't mark on the calendar. It's early yet, so he'll take his time about drawing himself from the warmth of the covers, careful to leave his housemates to their slumber as he does. Wouldn't do to have them up early themselves to spoil their surprise, though it's just as special a day for them, too. It's more likely that they'll wake soon, and yet he intends to try.
With one step, he finds himself in the kitchen, the distance and closed doors nothing to him with his abilities. He leaves the room in darkness and moves around it quietly, gathering things he knows he'll need. His eyes haven't seen clearly in years, but he knows his own home well enough by now to know precisely where everything is, and even in socks, he can hear his own feet padding about the kitchen floor.
Once he has everything settled, he starts the oven and puts on his apron and a kettle to heat tea. It's going to be a long morning and a longer day, and... he thinks he'll start it with a cake.
The night of Dec 14th:
It's well past the boys' bedtime after such an exciting and unhappy day all around. The kitchen is still a mess, in part, and he'll work on the details later. In fact, that's his excuse, should anyone find him awake at this hour, as to why he is awake. But it's his tradition to remember.
It has been five years to him since his world had been shattered, hidden behind a quiet smile that even now sometimes is hard to maintain. Perhaps it could have been easier had Vincent not been returned to him, taken away, returned as a boy, then taken away again so very recently. But old wounds had been reopened, and he needed this time to himself. He needed to cry it out over a nice, hot cup of tea now or risk bottling it up and watching it explode on him and serve collateral damage on others at some unknown time later.
As happy a day as it should have been and was, he needs to mourn. The Grim Reaper academy had tried its best to take all emotion out of the job, but in the end, they all had once been human.

As many times as he's made this, he's sure that he has it right, but still, he wants this to be as perfect as he can make it. To that end, he takes a spoon and dips the tip into the icing and hands it out to Astre. "No, thank you, but try this. Tell me what you think."
no subject
"It won't spoil my breakfast?" He couldn't help but ask, a laugh in his voice, before scooping the icing off the tip with his finger and giving it a taste. "Mmm, it's really good."
no subject
There's a light shooing motion of his hand and he gets back to work on the icing, nearly done with blending it all together. "You go on now and have yourself a bit of tea. This will be done here soon and it will be up to you and your brother to make it disappear. If I do nothing else today, you can spoil yourselves rotten on sweets all you like, so long as you don't get tired of it. We want you to enjoy it as much as you can, yes?"
no subject
"It's our birthday." A little laugh as he was shoo'd away, plucking the kettle from the stove and filling it enough for a few cups of tea. Enough for the twins and Undertaker, in case the reaper changed his mind.
"You really are spoiling us! I'm sure nobody else would think to just let us have our fill of sweets. You'll be having some with us of course, won't you? It wouldn't be the same if it was just us."
no subject
"It is, and a happy birthday to you!" Had he not had his hands full, he would have given it with more enthusiasm rather than a light giggling, but he'll hug the boy proper once he's done here. They risk a food fight, he thinks, if he does it now. "Of course I'll have a slice of this with you. Then, if you want, we can finish it off or take a swim in the lake or anything you like."
The swim? He has his doubts. There's already a fire burning in the living room after all.
no subject
"I think I'd prefer more cake, really. And staying inside where it's warm." Also the fact that he still doesn't know how to swim. And he doesn't want to confess that, more out of embarrassment.
And he really does prefer the warmth, as Undertaker is well aware after almost two years living together.

He turns back to the icing to give it a few more good turns with the spoon. "It's said on the television that it may yet snow today if the clouds can't control themselves. What do you think? I can hardly tell with the skies overcast."
no subject
"Cake is nicer anyway." He smiled, going back to fixing tea for them and getting a few cups down. For whenever Ciel dragged himself out of bed. "It certainly looks like it might snow. And it's been chilly enough for it."
no subject
"It has, hasn't it? We might have a chance to watch it through the windows later when it starts to grow dark again." Was that how the boys spent their birthday in the past? He imagined it might have been a part of the better times, when there were parents and happier reasons to celebrate. It wouldn't ever be like that again, he knew, even if Vincent and Rachel found their way back into the world, as they were before things went sour. Too much had happened by now to taint the day.
But he would try. And the icing was nearly thick enough across the top of the first cake for him to add on the second.

"That would be nice. Rain is calming. And we'll be inside and warm with treats and tea and each other." They'd mostly spent the day running and playing, free of their lessons, allowed more treats than normal, trying to sneak into the kitchen. The twins had been little hellions, eventually settling down for a short nap.
He finishes fixing the tea, bringing them over to Undertaker and sipping at his own. Before trying to sneak another little taste of that icing.

He's only half serious, so says his giggle. Really though, he can't help himself. If the twins aren't excited about today, he must be. As much pain and sorrow as their family has brought him, he wouldn't have traded it for the world. They had changed his own life without even meaning to, when he thought he would surely go mad from boredom. How could he not try to share in that joy, even a little? He notes that tea brought from him, but doesn't yet touch it. The icing needs to be done and it needs to be done well. And that sneak? He'll let it pass.

"If it does snow, I'll have to bundle up." Being generally sickly still. "I never actually had the chance to play out in the snow, did you know? Lizzie and Ciel always did, I bundled up and watched. Or stayed inside."
